Why SEMrush and what is it anyway?
SEMrush is a SEO tool that can help you analyze any website for traffic, keywords, competitors and a lot more. Instead of definitions, let me clear these terms in a practical way.
20 years ago the internet was an empty place (compared to what it is today). If you had a hobby back then, like doing magic tricks, you could launch a website about magic tricks. It wasn’t easy, you had to suffer a lot learning about HTML, CSS and other web technologies, creating a website was kind of a pain and a lot of work. But once online your site could easily be the number one website in the world in that specific genre. You could create a website with only a few articles and one week later all people in the world searching for “magic tricks” saw your site in Google (or any of its predecessors). First page, first place. Competition was so low that you could just create any website and have lots and lots of traffic instantly.
Let’s fast forward 20 years. These days the situation is exactly the opposite. With today’s superior content management systems and blogging platforms (like WordPress) you can create a professional website in literally less than an hour and you don’t even need to know what HTML is, everything is drag-and-drop. It will look, feel and function perfectly. But reality will soon hit you after you add your most awesome content to your baby website: in today’s web jungle it will remain totally invisible.
Since our site is dedicated to new websites and blogs and as we closely monitor the birth and death of about 100.000 domains every day we can tell you one thing for sure: without a rock solid strategy your site will fail miserably. Why? Because if you create a website about your hobby, like magic tricks today, it will most probably never get to the first page of any search engines. There are already thousands of other websites about your niche (magic tricks) that are bigger, older, stronger and they will dominate the first few pages of Google hits. And it’s a fact that more than 90% of people never even get to the second page in Google, not to mention the 5th page where your content will reside.
You are right, it’s kind of depressing. But there is a solution. If you use the right tools, you can outperform your competitors. And SEMrush is exactly a tool that was built to help you gain this advantage.
How can you get extra traffic with SEMrush?
Like we mentioned, today there are thousands of websites about literally everything. Or are there? Well, it depends. It depends on what niche, what genre you want to write about. And how you approach your favorite topic.
Do you want to start a blog about making money online or living healthy? Don’t even bother. These topics are so oversaturated that you will never make it. Believe me! It’s almost like starting a new oil and gas company or creating a new car brand. It was possible 100 years ago, it’s not possible today. But creating a company for making funny stickers or custom cool decorations for cars? Well, that’s still possible and if managed well this company can make some decent money.
Likewise, creating a website about healthy living doesn’t make any sense now in 2019, it will fail. But creating a website about the health benefits of Chinese walnuts…..that may still be unique and successful.
So the ultimate question is: how do you know, which directions you should take, what niche you should choose and which keywords you should aim for? This is where SEMrush comes into the picture.
The practical usage of SEMrush
Instead of talking about SEMrush in general we will show you a practical example so you get the feel and learn how to use it to your own (site’s) advantage.
One of the BrandNewBlogs’ crew happens to be a Cuban salsa expert. No, not the sauce, the dance. A year ago he discovered that there were practically no hits for “best salsa dancers” and “best salsa movies” in Google, so he created a tiny little website called damedoshu.com with these two topics.
The site only has these 2 major posts (and a couple of one-liners to fill the space), still, it qualifies for hundreds of keywords in Google, many of which are first page hits!
The site ranks #1 in Google for “best salsa movies” and “best cuban salsa dancers” for almost a year now! A tiny little site with only 2 major posts and no real backlinks, no facebook shares, no pinterest, no Quora, not any SEO tricks, optimization, nothing.
For this phrase it even got a Google highlight, being #1 out of 10,800,000 search results!
Do you want to know why and how it’s possible? Do you want to see your posts on the top? Then read on, because we will tell you all the steps to achieve this!
Step #1 – Domain overview, your first advantage
First of all, you will need to get access to SEMrush. It’s pretty easy, you can register with our special link that provides you 2 weeks of free access to the best SEMrush tools. You just have to provide your e-mail and a password, simple as that.
Once done, you can start using SEMrush. First of all let’s look at its analytical capabilities by picking Domain overview on the left and entering your own website’s address.
Here you can see an overview about your site regarding organic search, paid searches, backlinks, advertising. In reality our site receives much more traffic, but this chart above is only for the US and desktop computers, you can change the database and device for the chart.
Wow, our top keywords and how they are positioned in Google. Awesome! As you can see our site (with only 2 major posts!) have about 40 keywords that are on the first page in Google hits! The remaining 400 keywords are a bit behind, but most of these keywords were not chosen by us, these are just random long tail keywords that Google found in our articles.
On the left side you can also see that half of our traffic comes for the phrase “salsa movie”. Good to know.
Now, this is awesome. These are our direct competitors targeting the same niche. And look at that chart on the right! Just see how easily you can compare yourself to your competitors. Our example site is shown as a brown circle in the middle. It’s already obvious that our site is a massive overperformer. Why? Because with only two articles we are raking for almost 500 keywords and get a significant amount of search traffic. It means that our articles are rich and very well written.
Have you noticed the blue “View full report” buttons? Yes, here we can check all 440 keywords and 408 competitors of our site!
Step #2 – Traffic analytics
It’s an estimation of your site’s traffic and contains other very useful information. Like chart for unique visitors, average visit duration and bounce rate. Desktop vs mobile visitors and sources of your traffic, also you get a map to see where your visitors are located. Pretty cool. As you see 71% of the site’s traffic is coming from Search results. In reality it’s closer to 90% with occasional shares and direct access, but it varies from month to month.
Step #3 – Organic Research
Now things are getting interesting. For example the Organic Keywords Trend chart, which shows the overall quality of your keywords.
And one which is even more interesting, the Position Changes Trend graph:
On this chart you can see that how many of your keywords have moved upwards or downwards in the Google hit list. Dark blue is for new keywords, light blue is for those that are ranked better now than they used to be and yellows are for the ones that moved in the wrong direction.
You can even get the details, for example above keywords have moved to the first page from the second one in Google lately, thus these will generate more traffic for our site in the future. Quite happy about “body roll” for example which is now 9th and have a search volume of 2900 per month.
Step #4 – Keyword Gap – how to gain advantage
Up to this point we have gained some very useful information, but from now on we can start acting!
How can we attract more visitors to our site for free? By writing posts that will be ranked high in Google. And how can you rank high in Google? By covering unique, new topics, by answering questions that have never been answered, by fulfilling needs that have not been fulfilled.
Google will always try to show the most relevant and trusted sources to any searches. And here is the key. If many of the hits are relevant, it will show the most trusted ones on the top of the list. But if only your post is relevant, it will probably show it anyway, even though it’s “not that trusted”.
So there is only one thing left: you will need to find the most unique topics and the most unique keywords that are out there to rank instantly (or to rank at all). And by now you have to see one important thing: these days it doesn’t help you at all if you publish a hundred posts randomly. It’s all hit or miss, but you will probably only have a hundred posts on the 5th, 6th and 7th pages of Google’s hit list and believe me, none of those will ever be clicked.
But if you can write one article which fills an empty space on the internet, it will rank, even if your website is quite new on the web with no authority.
So all you have to do is find the right topics and the right keywords. This is where SEMrush really shines.
Step #5 – Keyword Gap in action
What you can see here is the list of our example site’s keywords. To be more specific, these are the highest ranking keywords out of all 438 listed on SEMrush (you can check all of them of course). You can see the volume, keyword difficulty, average competition and trend for all of them.
It’s good to see where you are at, but it still doesn’t get you closer to your new topics. So here we arrive to one of the best tools in SEMrush that now you have free access to.
Step #6 – The Keyword Magic Tool
As our example site is about Cuban salsa, let’s enter this phrase into the tool:
As you see it just returned 1,310 unique keywords regarding this topic! You can see the volume, trend, the keyword difficulty, CPC, competition and other information for all of them.
Let’s make a sort for keyword difficulty (KD):
We have just found 4 keywords that doesn’t even have a KD score (and dozens more with a low score which means they are good targets for a new article).
Let’s check what Google gives for “slow cuban salsa”:
As you can see the top hits are all from Youtube and only the second hit is somewhat relevant.
All we have to do is create a new post with relevant information and a good title like “The best 5 slow salsa songs for practicing and teaching”.
Will it rank? Of course it will! As soon as Google indexes our new article this will be the one and only, most relevant search result in the world for this phrase! Almost every single person looking for slow salsa songs will click the link and visit your page.
And do you remember that our site is already ranked for more than 400 keywords with only 2 posts? By adding a well written 3rd post to the site it may easily be ranked for a hundred more long tail keywords that will also bring us visitors!
Step #7 – Rinse & repeat
So is it really that hard ranking #1 in Google? Let me repeat our inital answer to this question: “Ranking high in Google is super easy…or…nearly impossible”. And you are probably already starting to understand why. You have a limited amount of time and effort that you can put into your own brand new website and here you have a choice:
- you can put time and effort into an awesome article that will never rank in Google and never bring you a single visitor to your website
- or you can put the same amount of time and effort into writing articles that will rank instantly and naturally
For the first option all you have to do is work hard just to see your website fail over time.
For the second option you will have to work hard and use the right tools to see your website rise above those thousands of other sites that are competing with no strategy. The choice is yours. You may know that about 100,000 domains are registered every single day! But there is another side of the coin, because just about the same amount of domains are expiring every single day!
You can have big dreams, but you’d better have the right tools and a good strategy, too
Like we said, in our partnership with SEMrush now you can have 2 weeks of free access with our link to the best tools that can give you competitive advantage in this really tough game.
Should you use this opportunity? We strongly believe that there is no reason not to use this great opportunity! You should register to SEMrush, have a look around, try all their tools for free and then you can decide if you want to pay for their tools in the future or not, it’s totally up to you.
But if you really want success these days you can’t avoid using an analytical tool, and we believe that SEMrush is one of the best tools that you can find.
